If you suffer from bad breath then you are not alone, however I’m sure that isn’t too great a comfort because you want to know how to get rid of your own bad breath. But first let’s look at why some people get it and what is its cause.

For 90% of halitosis sufferers, the cause of their breathe odor is due to a bacteria that lives in their mouth. The waste products of the bacteria let’s out various sulfur compounds (a similar gas that is released by a rotting egg).

But that isn’t the only waste byproduct of the bacteria, some people also experience cadaverine which is a smell similar to corpses, putrescine which is similar to decaying meat, skatole which is the smell of human fecal matter or isovaleric acid which is just like sweaty smelly feet.

Yuk. No wonder this is a major problem for many people.

So what causes these anaerobic bacteria’s to give off a stench with some people and not others?

It all comes down to how much oxygen is in your mouth. Dental plaque (even a small amount of it) can cause areas in your mouth to become oxygen depleted and creating the atmosphere where the anaerobic bacteria will flourish and case your bad breath.

Ok, so how do we get rid of these bacteria?

Unfortunately it’s not possible to get rid of it entirely, but it is possible to reduce its number so that the odor is undetectable.

Always brush and floss after each meal to make sure there is no food left in your mouth for the bacteria to eat, leftover food debris, especially high protein foods, are a favorite choice for the bacteria.

Get a tongue scraper – most of the bacteria live on the surface of your tongue and a quick swipe with your tongue scraper will get rid of most of them. Research has actually shown that there is a direct correlation with the amount of coating on someone’s tongue and the number of bacteria present. So reducing the bacterial count on a person’s tongue can significantly reduce the bad breath odor.

And finally keep your regular dental visits up, there are many places that the anaerobic bacteria can live below the gum line and in between teeth that a good dentist will be able to get rid of.
