It isn’t just people that get bad breath; our four legged puppy friends also get halitosis that can sometimes be quite smelly.

So what do you do if your dog has bad breath?

Firstly you need to determine if the odor is because of an underlying medical condition such as gingivitis or a tooth abscess or if it’s just plain old bad doggie breath.

It pays to see a vet who specializes in pet teeth and mouth disease to rule out Gingivitis (which is inflammation of the gums), foreign bodies caught in your dog’s mouth (bones or plant matter), or an abscessed tooth.

If there is nothing health wise that’s causing your dogs breath then here are some things you can do at home.

Brush your dog’s teeth every day. You can get special toothpastes and either dog teeth brushes or finger brushes to help clean your dog’s teeth.

There are also many good doggie treats which can help freshen the breath and remove any tartar building up on his teeth.

Sometimes you dog might require a special diet such as Hill’s Prescription Diet T/D® or Eukanuba Restricted-Calorie Rewards® which can help with his overall health and can be beneficial to fixing any diet related halitosis.

For severe cases, you can also spray 0.12% strength chlorhexidine into your dog’s mouth once a day for one to two weeks to kill any bad bacteria which may be causing your dog’s breath problems.
