badbreathcartoon2One of the most embarrassing (and surprisingly common) problems that many people suffer from is bad breath or halitosis. Having it can damage your self esteem, your confidence and it can even cause problems in relationships – so what do you do about it? Well this post will go over how to get rid of bad breath so that you can once again be able to talk to people without feeling self conscious.

Getting rid of bad breath obviously relies on knowing what has caused your breath problems in the first place. It could be from anything from poor dental hygiene, to gum or tooth decay, or even general health problems from the stomach and intestines which produce a gas that might be the culprit.

If you know the reason for your halitosis then you are in a much better position to know how to get rid of bad breath in your situation.

Usually your best bet is to visit your dentist to rule out tooth or gum decay. While a trip to the dentist can sometimes be expensive, so too can buying mouth washes and other remedies over the course of a year – so weigh that up before you decide about going to your dental professional.

Because if your bad breath is something that can be fixed easily in the dentist chair then you won’t have to worry about it any more because you’ll be cured almost immediately.

Most often however, it is usually caused by bacteria that is growing in your mouth. Usually they begin feeding on food left behind after eating and as they digest it they expel a gas not unlike that of rotten eggs. I know – gross huh!

While everyone has bacteria in their mouths, it’s when this bacteria get’s out of control that causes the problem.

So what do you do about this?

badbreathcartoonFirst you need to make sure you have impeccable oral hygiene. Brush your teeth after every meal and floss at least once per day – especially after eating meat. You can also buy tongue scrapers that are very gentle yet great at getting any mouth bacteria off your tongue.

I have heard that some people have great success from swishing salt water around their mouths too after each meal. Salt is a natural antibacterial so is very efficient at naturally (and economically) killing off any bacteria in your mouth.

There are plenty of foods that are also great at controlling any breath problems such as yoghurt which is a probiotic to chewing on mint or parsley that help sweeten and freshen your breath.

You should also be aware that some bad breath is caused not in the mouth, but from the stomach or intestines. Food starts to ferment in the gut and give off a gas that causes your bad breath.

This is why you should always strive to be living as healthy a life as possible. Eating a healthy diet, exercise and doing stress relieving activities such as yoga or meditation really can help the body start working efficiently again so that you won’t get that nasty gas.

It’s possible that the gas is also caused by a food allergy that you may have – so if you have exhausted all other possible means of why you have bad breath then it might be worth going and getting a food allergy test done by your doctor just to make sure that isn’t causing your breath problems. It sounds silly – but many people have found that they are causing their halitosis just by eating something they didn’t even know they were allergic too!

Knowing how to get rid of your bad breath is only part of the puzzle. You really need to know what is causing it in the first place – because once you know that – you are ready to cure the problem and have fresh breath once again.
