How To Get Rid Of Tonsil Stones
ADVERTISING
Tonsil Stones (or tonsilloliths) are a common problem whereby leftover food and microorganisms become stuck on the throat or tonsils leaving a little white ’stone’ like bump.
You’ll usually find them in crevasses in your mouth, most often at the back of the throat or on the tonsils themselves. They look just like little white spots on your throat.
They are a major cause of bad breath because the bacteria in your mouth starts feeding on the food in them releasing a sulphur compound (sort of like rotten eggs) which causes the bad odor.
Other symptoms include sore and swollen throats, and having trouble swallowing.
How to Remove Tonsil Stones
If you want to get rid of your tonsil stones then you have a few options. While annoying to try and remove, it’s not impossible. You can use a toothbrush, your finger or a Q-tip and try and dislodge them that way. Many people also report having good results from using a water pik which is a pressurized dental irrigator that flushes them out.
A tonsillectomy is often not needed to remove the tonsil stones. This operation becomes more risky as an adult than a child, and while it will solve the problem of tonsil stones, there are easier and simpler methods.
However if the non-surgical options don’t remove them then do discuss your options with your dental professional.
Avoiding Tonsil Stones
If you’ve managed to successfully remove them then there are ways that you can keep them at bay and stop them returning.
Gargle frequently with salt water as the water can help rinse any leftover debris out of your mouth and salt is a natural antibacterial.
Keep up good oral care procedures such as brushing and flossing to remove any leftover food.
Keep yourself in good health so your immune system is functioning properly
Remember that while annoying, tonsil stones are not serious or life threatening – but because they produce symptoms such as bad breath and sore throats they should be dealt with as soon as they appear.
