Tongue Scraper to Get Rid of Bad Breath

You’ve probably heard me mention a few times in this blog how great tongue scraper’s are at getting rid of bacteria on the tongue (which is a primary place that they can live). In fact, it has been found that most cases of bad breath due to germs and bacteria come from the back of the tongue. But what exactly is a tongue scraper, does it hurt and how do they work?
Do tongue scraper’s hurt?
Let’s put your mind at ease straight away, used correctly tongue scrapers do not hurt at all. And they are not difficult to use either.
You can apply pressure as hard or gentle as you like. And if you are new to scraping then it’s best to start with a gentle pressure that will probably tickle more than it hurts.
Get your tongue cleaner and wet it under the faucet so it’s moist. You can use toothpaste with it or not depending on your preference. You should gently ‘scrape’ your tongue with it. This will remove any bacteria and germs that are sitting on your tongue as well as any left over food particles (sometimes food particles are so small that you can’t see them).
You will still need to wash them away, so after scraping rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash depending on your preference. Many people who don’t like the taste of mouthwash like to rinse their mouth’s with salt water as the salt is a great natural antibacterial.
If you don’t rinse afterwards the food particles and bacteria will just settle back down on your tongue, teeth or gums and you won’t have helped get rid of your bad breath.
Of course if you are still worried about using a tongue cleaner, then there is nothing wrong with using a bit of toothpaste on your toothbrush and gently going over your tongue. It isn’t as effective as using a tongue cleaner, as brushes use different motions (swirling instead of scraping) but you can eliminate some of the germs that are causing your bad breath this way.
Do you use your tongue scraper before or after brushing?
Again this comes down to preference. Many people like to do it after brushing but there is nothing wrong with doing it before. Just make sure that you rinse your mouth thoroughly afterwards to wash away any of the food or germs that were removed.
You’ll find that after brushing and scraping your mouth feels really clean and fresh and if bacteria is the cause of your bad breath, that you’ll be very close to eliminating the problem.
